Welcome to the
Homer Central School Social Studies Department!
People live in the present.
We plan for the future.
But we study the past.
We plan for the future.
But we study the past.
Why? Why, in a day in age where we can easily look up facts like names and dates, do we still study the past? In a nut shell, history teaches us to think.
Students who study history have better reasoning skills. They have the ability to see how an action can impact not just the short-term but how it will affect life decades or even centuries from now. They are able to better articulate and justify themselves . They can provide evidence to back up their opinion and argue their point. History is necessary to provide a basis for good citizenship, both locally but also as a citizen of a world that is becoming smaller and smaller everyday. While our students may never need to know the leader of China in 1911 or the candidates of every presidential election, the skills that are taught through history education are crucial to the evolution of our students higher level thinking skills.
Here, at Homer CSD, our teachers emphasize these skills in our lessons to ensure that our youth are prepared for our ever-changing world. Please take a look around to see what the Social Studies Department has to offer.
